Web Performance & Front-End Optimization

Why FEO (Front-End Optimization) ?

Considering the top 1000 websites (according to Alexa figures), average page weight has been mutiplied by 2 in the past 2 years (october 2011 – october 2013), with an average weight now exceeding 1,5MB.

2013 - Average bytes per page by Content Type

It’s easy to understand why : websites are more and more interactive, with more and more Javascript libraries, pictures, social widgets, fonts…

According to Steve Souders (creator of YSlow), more than 80% of the end-user response times are spent on the front-end.

So, we’ll talk about Web Performance and particularly Front-End Optimization. But we have an ambition: go further than tools like Google Page Speed or YSlow. Indeed, we will focus on CMS, on Javascript and CSS Frameworks, on social widgets, etc. We want to discuss about performance and quality, not only on general best pratices, but on all the tools widely used on the web (take a look at JQuery figures), with their own tricks and tips. Our main goal: to centralize in this blog a knowledge database of best pratices on major technologies.

…and you are ?

We are 4 French people just graduated from Engineering School, working on a SaaS tool for website analysis and website speed test. This tool will release as a beta version in few weeks, but we shall keep that for a next post ;)

With this new blog, we want share our discovers, our experiences, our mistakes too ! And that’s not all : we want to learn about your projects, your experiences, so don’t hesitate to tell us your stories about performance, and to share your knowledge, either you are a master of HTTP Cache management or a JQuery guru !

Next post, we will probably continue with other figures about performance. Have a nice week !
